Windellama Road Rehabilitation

Windellama NSW

Background

Our client was required to upgrade an 18 km section of a heavy haul road, located in Windellama southeast of the township of Goulburn. The upgrades were to allow heavy and local vehicles to safely traffic the pavement, through increasing the structural capacity and geometric improvements.

Scope

D&N were engaged to carry out geotechnical investigation, including intrusive pavement boreholes, Falling Weight Deflectometer and laboratory testing to estimate the remaining pavement life and existing structural capacity. D&N provided pavement structural design services, presenting multiple options including lightly and heavily bound layers, to improve recycling of local materials and reduce project costs.

Challenges

To provide the most the safe, sustainable and cost-effective solution for our client, the project team invested heavily in a robust geotechnical investigation and design process, utilising onsite recycled and local materials to meet project targets. The site comprised an active heavy haul route, so our primary project challenge was the health and safety of our site team. Through following our processes, (developed in accordance with ISO 45001 – Occupational Health & Safety) D&N were able to complete the project with no reportable safety incidents.
