The Newell highway connects the Queensland and Victorian borders between Tocumwal and Goondiwindi, travelling through key towns of West Wyalong, Parkes and Dubbo. It is the main route for all freight, livestock, tourism and emergency services throughout regional NSW. The NSW Government has invested $500 million into the Newell Highway, including safety upgrades through overtaking lanes and variable message signs along the 1,000 km route.
D&N has undertaken geotechnical investigation for twenty-six overtaking lanes and eleven variable message sign boards and associated hardstand areas over the previous 3 years. The project comprised over 450 test pits, large diameter boreholes and cored boreholes to support design of the various project elements. D&N worked closely with project stakeholders throughout the works (AECOM, BMD and Transport for NSW).
The investigation and reporting were all completed on time, and on budget for several key stakeholders. Given the large extents of the site, the key challenge for our team included maintaining high levels of safety and quality throughout the project duration. Our investigations informed the basis of civil and structural design, throughout the changing landscape of regional NSW.
